- Keep the fridge cold, but not too cold. Be sure that the temperature is at 40 degrees Fahrenheit for the fridge, and 0 degrees Fahrenheit for the freezer.
- Wait before placing warm leftovers into the fridge. Warm foods will cause the unit to work harder to keep your other foods chilled.
- The location of your fridge is important. If at all possible, make sure that the refrigerator is placed away from the stove, microwave or dishwasher. These other appliances likely get used often inside of your kitchen, and they also produce a lot of heat.
- Don’t “window shop.” Don’t stand in front of or open the fridge considering perfect snack or drink. Chilled air escapes, and room temperature air gets inside.
- Keep the coils clean. Be sure you are routinely cleaning the coils on the back or underside of the appliance. Dusty or dirty coils can cause a lot of strain on your fridge.
- Keep containers covered. This prevents the fridge from having to cool every exposed surface inside of it.
