Improving Indoor Air Quality

You owe it to your family to make sure that you all are breathing in clean, fresh, and healthy air. Below are a few steps to follow in order to improve your home’s indoor air quality.

  • Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter: This can help to remove built-up concentrations of allergens (pet dander, pollen, dust, etc.) from your carpet and rugs. Strong suction and the HEPA filter will ensure that these contaminate aren’t blown back into the room from the vacuum’s exhaust. Be sure to vacuum several times over heavy-traffic areas of your home for the best results.
  • Mop hard surface floors: When you are mopping, it picks up dust and allergens. It may be in your best interest to make use of a microfiber mop instead of using soap and other cleaning agents which could be dangerous or irritating to breathe in.
  • Use door mats: Always place door mats in front of any entry way into your home. This includes the front door, basement doors, patio doors, side entry doors, garage entry doors, etc. Visitors to your home, and your family, should be sure to wipe their feet off on these mats upon entry into the home. The mats can remove chemicals, dirt, pesticides, and other pollutants that may be tracked inside by shoes.
  • Dehumidifiers: A dehumidifier can help you with controlling the amount of moisture in the air inside of your home. Moisture in the air is better known as ‘humidity.’ Whenever you have excessive humidity levels, it can aid in the development of dangerous mold and mildew. Mold spores in the air inside your home can result in a variety of medical problems, including respiratory issues. Additionally, the mold can make your home smell very musty and foul. Additionally, it is important to understand that if your home is dry and you have chapped lips and itchy skin, this could indicate that your home is LACKING humidity and you could benefit from having a humidifier installed.
  • No Smoking: Do not allow anyone to smoke inside of your home. If you have family members or visitors to your home who are smokers, be sure that they go outside when doing so. Smoke inside of the home can lead to serious health issues and the odors can infiltrate fabrics, furniture, and more.
