Is Air Duct Cleaning Necessary in the Fall?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average person spends nearly 90% of their time indoors. Even if you may have been outside enjoying pleasant, mild weather this season, you know it won’t last much longer. Brutally cold temperatures, harsh winds and snowy days will be here before you know it. When that happens, you may not want to spend as much time outdoors, and the toasty comfort of your home is what you will seek while you wait for warmer weather to return.

With all this time inside your home, make sure your indoor air quality isn’t suffering from an over-abundance of dirt, dust and pet dander. Using your fireplace and/or heater with the windows closed, your indoor air can get even more pollutant-filled than it was during the spring and summer.

If your air is filled with contaminants, odds are likely that your home’s ducts are also…well, dirty. The ducts are the pathway for warm air from your heating system to reach the rest of your home. If the ducts are dirty, air can’t easily pass through them. In turn, this could lead to cold rooms and a furnace that has to work overtime to try and keep the home at the temperature you’ve set.

This is why we recommend having your air ducts cleaned NOW during the fall season — before the weather takes a turn and your family is spending even more time inside the house.

Benefits of air duct cleaning

Breathe in the clean air!

It’s no surprise that professional duct cleaning will lead to improved indoor air quality. Your air ducts won’t be clogged with pet hair, dirt, dust, soot, etc., and airborne pollutants won’t be pushed out into your living space every time your heater runs. Clean air ducts also will lead to a more evenly heated home since there aren’t obstructions to try and push around or through.

Improve your heater’s efficiency

Additionally, a furnace that doesn’t have to work extra hard to push out air is less likely to face premature wear and tear (or expensive, unexpected repair bills). Clean air ducts will help your heating system run more efficiently. This could mean less expensive energy bills each month, as well.

Also, a professional air duct cleaning service will note potential problems with the structure of your ducts — e.g., cracks or holes — that can be repaired so that no further damage is done. Often, cracks and holes in a duct can lead to heat loss in a home — another problem that can lead to uneven heating throughout.

Lessen the severity of allergies

If you or a loved one suffers from allergies, the last thing you want in your home is a dirty, dusty air duct system. Not only does it cause problems for your heating system’s efficiency, but the system will continue to circulate dirty and dusty air throughout your home.

Schedule an appointment

Now is the time to make your appointment with a trusted air duct professional in your area. Often, heating and cooling companies offer this service. If you wait until the weather gets colder, their appointment books will be filled with repair calls for broken heating equipment!
