National Electric Safety Month

There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to doing work that may put you in danger of being electrocuted and seriously injured. May is National Electrical Safety Month, and EHS Today has put together a few tips to keep you safe this season.
  1. Be aware of your surroundings. Always know the location of power lines. They may be attached to poles, or even to your house. Awareness is especially important if you are planning on doing work on a ladder and being high up in the air.
  2. Keep yourself 10 feet away from power lines at all times. While this may seem excessive, electricity can arc from power lines and strike you or any equipment you may be using, such as a bush/tree pruner or pool skimming stick.
  3. When doing work on your roof, be extra careful. Items on top of your home, such as a satellite dish or antennae, may make use of electricity. Never use water to clean your roof or gutters.
  4. Stay away from trees next to power lines. Don’t ever try to trim tree branches that are close to a power line. A limb can easily fall and land on top of the line.
  5. Follow safety procedures at all times. Even if it may take you longer to finish a job, or you may need to call in a professional, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Always keep safety in mind when you are planning on doing any work near power lines on your property.
